Resilience

Chronically Strong continues to offer a helping hand to those trying to withstand and recover. We are here to help you mentally/emotionally cope through support groups, book studies, and many more community events.

Book Studies

At Chronically Strong we want to provide as many opportunities for the community to connect, share ideas, and to inspire one another to a greater understanding of mental illness and the issues that surround it. We want to get the community involved in learning and discussing things related to mental illness and how we can come together as a community. Once per quarter we offer a book study group for people to build community and learn new viewpoints about a difficult topic through the book but also through their interaction. Some topics may include: Faith and Suicide Race and Suicide Poverty Issues and Stressors Trauma Autobiography

Signs of Hope

We never want to forget where we came from. This program allows us to keep the #linksofhope going by providing places throughout the community where people can pick up a sign of their own. By offering them individually, it makes it super affordable to spread a little bit of hope. To be notified of when these pick up locations are up and running, sign up for our newsletter. How It Started In March 2020, after the COVID-19 pandemic broke out across the U.S. we reconnected with Amy Wolff, the founder of the Don’t Give Up Signs Movement out of Oregon (www.dontgiveupsigns.com), and ordered 40 yard signs with positive messages to help encourage others. We thought maybe just a few friends would put them up, and perhaps we could beg a few neighbors, but to our surprise the community was craving to hold on to hope and before we knew it, it was the beginning of May 2020. We had placed over 300 signs in 6 surrounding Central PA counties and received over $2,800 in donations to help keep the message going. We made the process simple and no contact during a time when panic was widespread. Through organic social media people learned that they could text us with "Drop sign here and 'X' address." Chronically Strong then delivered the sign and put in their yard. Soon after, people started donating to cover the cost of their sign and often much more.

Finding Hope Together

Have you ever thought about just not being here anymore? Do you feel alone at times like no one will understand? Have you attempted suicide in the past and are looking for others like you for support? Let's find hope together in this peer led support group. Chronically Strong believes that hope, healing and mental health can be found by strengthening the community. Part of finding hope is connecting with other people who may also be struggling to find hope. Finding Hope Together is a peer led support group facilitated by a Chronically Strong volunteer who has met or exceeded our minimal requirements of certification in Trauma Informed Care and QPR Suicide Prevention. This group is NOT therapy and we are not a crisis or mental health provider. All attendees will be required to sign a waiver as well as a copy of group guidelines to ensure a safe, supportive group environment. About Chronically Strong Chronically Strong is a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting mental health awareness and encouraging community conversation on things that are untalkable. Rocks of Hope

The first mental health awareness event that Chronically Strong ever put on was a 'Suicide Prevention Rock Party' on July 25, 2021. A group of volunteers were tasked with creating a first event that would provide awareness and also get the community engaged in conversation. Over 150 people came to this first event, and we quickly learned the value of gathering people together in a low-pressure environment to do something positive to bring hope to others. While participants painted their rocks, organic conversations began happening and the shared their personal experiences and losses. Hundreds of rocks were painted that day with a link on the back to our resource page. They were later hidden throughout the community so that people would find them as a 'Rock of Hope', becoming another #linktohope in their journey to find hope, healing and health. Why Rocks of Hope Parties? Our organization is made up of just a few people, but the world has many. If we partner with someone like you, we can grow our #linkofhope chain faster and give hope to more people. Plus, by giving you the tools and know-how of how to hold a Chronically Strong Rocks of Hope party, you can help spread hope anytime you want, with as many people as you want, as often as you want. What is the Benefit of Holding a Rock Party? You bring the community together, even with a small group of friends for a positive purpose with a simple mission of spreading hope. You encourage mental health awareness by the conversation by the conversation that will naturally occur at the table. You invite others to be open to having a rock party themselves by sharing your experience on Social Media even if you say nothing about the reason or why you are doing it. You are creating hope in your community by hiding the finished rocks in places like parks, hospitals, public buildings, and so forth. (We have never been told “no” yet.) You are helping a mama keep a promise to her daughter to make sure her life counted and that her story helped make a difference. You have the ability to pass on any love donations to Chronically Strong so that we can continue to help countless others through our other Links of Hope Programs. Even kids can do it! Who Can Help Answer My Questions? We want to make sure you have everything you need to have a successful rock party, whether it is just a few friends or a larger group. That is why we have created that Rocks of Hope Party Liason position. We will assign one of our volunteers specifically to you so that they can help coach you through the process from start to finish. Your party liaison will touch base with you while you are planning your party, just before your party, and after. You definitely have some great people to cheer you on that can share their experiences when they held their first party. Our goal is to make this an easy, fun experience for you and your community so that you will want to do it again to continue spreading hope. Are you Ready to Host A Party? First, you want to download a set of full instructions, making sure to complete full contact information at checkout so we can connect you with your party liaison.

Hope After Suicide

Suicide is a special kind of grief, and people right here in our communities are faced with life after their loved one's death by suicide, every single day. When you lose someone to suicide there can be so many emotions. The most common ones are shock, anger, disbelief, shame, guilt, despair, confusion, feelings of confusion. What type of relationship you had with the person that passed can also influence your grieving process: sister, daughter, son, parent, friend, brother, spouse, and so on. Because this type of death is so tragic, and because of the complicated grieving process, you may feel out of place at other, more general grief support groups. You may even feel embarrassed to share how your loved one died because of the stigma that so often surrounds suicide or mental illness. Often, those of us who lost someone close, such as a child, continue to suffer in isolation and silence because we can't imagine that someone else is able to understand. You are not alone. There are many of us who have suffered in silence looking to connect with someone like you. As part of Chronically Strong's commitment to helping loved ones who are supporting those with mental illness, this support group is being offered as a peer-led group so that you can be sure that the group facilitator has lived experience in the area of surviving a loved one who has lost their life to suicide. This session will be facilitated by our founder, Gina Casner, whose daughter Katie died on April 8, 2019 on her 53rd suicide attempt. Gina has worked in the mental health field in the areas of Family Preservation & Reunification, Family Based Mental Health Services, and Behaviorial Wrap Around. Gina currently works on an inpatient psychiatric unit and is a graduate student in clinical mental health counseling. Gina is also certified in Mental Health First Aid, and QPR Suicide Prevention. She facilitates this group as a peer to those whom have experienced loss. This group is peer-to-peer support group and does not take the place of professional mental health counseling nor is it intended to. Mental Health First Aid Training

Mental Health First Aid is an international education program proven to be effective in teaching adults how to recognize and respond to signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges. Peer-reviewed studies have been conducted around the world and show that individuals trained in the program: Grow their knowledge of signs, symptoms and risk factors of mental illnesses and addictions. Increase their confidence in and likelihood to help an individual in distress. Show increased mental wellness themselves. Just as CPR helps you assist an individual having a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid helps you assist someone experiencing a mental health or substance use-related crisis. In the Mental Health First Aid course, you learn risk factors and warning signs for mental health and addiction concerns, strategies for how to help someone in both crisis and non-crisis situations, and where to turn for help. Unlike the QPR: Suicide Prevention Training, MHFA focuses on a broad scope of emotions and how to help people experiencing emotional distress who may not be suicidal: Depression Trauma Substance Abuse Anxiety Psychosis Mental Health First Aid teaches about recovery and resiliency – the belief that individuals experiencing these challenges can and do get better, and use their strengths to stay well. Chronically Strong periodically holds MHFA community-wide trainings and is also available to bring trainings to your organization.
